Tin can plan

over 7 years ago by alex_kluppel

Which problem are you trying to solve?

Increase the lifecycle of the aluminum can.

How are you going to solve the problem?

By cutting and folding the can, and turning it into a useful aluminum sheet.

What is the impact of your project?

We want to create a solution to increase the life of the aluminum can by turning it into a flat surfice, a sheet, so
people can create other things with it, before putting it away.

How can the project be manufactured in the OpenLab?

All the solutions are thought considering that ordinary people could use this device, ans simple by folding and cutting
the sheets create something else.

Describe your project in detail

We´re creating a device to cut open a aluminum can. Providing the possibility of creating or manufacturing other
things, such as small containers (packing), substitutes for disposable plastic devices, disposable devices for civil
construction, and if possible other goods out of the compression and extrusion procedures.

I'm not sure I understand the idea? You're creating a device to cut open cans? What makes this different than
other scissors? And what will the sheets be used for?

If you intend to recycle aluminum, it is a beautiful thing. But you have to consider that you may need a high
temperature source to help you to reshape it. The cutting process is not enough in my opinion. It can be done, but it
may be expensive.

Hey, took me ages to find this "Comments" board here! Sorry.
Saud-Alshuaily - Thanks!

Actually the idea goes beyond the
cutting step. We are trying to extend the aluminum sheet lifecycle, by giving people new possibilities with a
"noble" material (remember we´re in Brazil).
We are finishing the cutting phase this week.
Aluminum sheets
connection are our focus next; and then we will spend some time working on ideas of product for the civil construction
industry.
I´m thinking kitchen or pathroom tiles. What do you think?

Omarhasayn89 - Well, we are trying to create a simple device that could be used by anyone with a good idea, and some
aluminum cans.
The procedure you mentioned works fine. But if you are creating something a little bit bigger, you might
cut yourself or get bored.
About the "reshaping". Our procedure does not consider melting the can. We are
doing our best to avoid any high energy consumming procedure.
We´re working olny with mechanical solution, folding,
bending and cutting only. Even eletronic welding is out of question.
Remember, the majority of our "clients"
can not afford complicated and expensive solutions, otherwise they would buy brand new metal sheets.
tks
-Sorry for the
lazy writting -

To connect some little components to one big maybe german "bördeln" is a solution (translation website leo:
flanging). In german it is named "Rollfalz" too. The tool for it (seen on german wikipedia) may be interesting
for you.

Nice idea , focus on the transformation process , good luck !

it would be great if the project gives little insight on what that device would look like!!
