foldable shelf: install damage free
over 7 years ago by SabineFabLabIng
Which problem are you trying to solve?
* refugees in mobile homes are not allowed to damage walls for shelving
* no space for furniture in small luggage in
case of relocation
* manage with little money
* a lot of free time
How are you going to solve the problem?
* install shelf on metal walls with strong magnet
* shelf is foldable to fit in small bag
* materials are easy
accessible and low cost
* selfmade, task, activity
What is the impact of your project?
for refugees: get connected, get in contact, use new language, activity, help themselves
for FabLab: help people, get
connected with commune, maybe newspaper article/advertising
How can the project be manufactured in the OpenLab?
* create prototyp
* test/calculate loading capacity
* create paper of instructions
* find strategy (FabLab event in
mobile homes / co work with commune / sponsors for magnets)
Describe your project in detail
The foldable shelf should be not only a part of furniture, but also a project for FabLabs and other groups, which are
interested in refugee issues. It should be an occasion to get in contact, help to self help, speak the new language and
attract attention for refugees and FabLabs.
The shelf itself will be a construction of wood, fabric, (approximatly 2)
magnets and rope.
The wood will be cut in parts, which will be glued on the fabric. This part you can coil in one
direction, but it is stable in the other. With the rope it will be connected to the magnets, which hold the whole
construction on the (metal) wall. If one coil it up, it will fit in a bag.
There are other variations in mind too. Less
wood and more fabric for example, more like an hammock.
It should be easy to build with simple tools and low cost
materials. For the magnets there may be sponsors.
Comments
of rubber parts on the ends of the shelf they used to suction air between them and the wall, which works to install the
shelf in place strongly
Yes we think about other ways to install on other walls. We think about other
designs too, for example an all-fabric shelf which has a lot of little bags to store things. Or an extendible shelf to
have a second surface under the first shelf. It depends all on the prototype and the loading capacity...
