Prosthesis

Which problem are you trying to solve?

Lack of affordable prosthesis for refugees living with an amputation

How are you going to solve the problem?

Designing and laser cutting lightweight materials for people with arm amputation

What is the impact of your project?

This prosthesis design will be easy to fit and many people living with amputations will be able to work as normal.

How can the project be manufactured in the OpenLab?

Open Lab will enable me to prototype lightweight materials for prosthesis and also having access to different tools like
laser cutters will enable me to make better prosthesis.

Describe your project in detail

I have been living in South Sudan for 3 months helping fit prosthesis to refugees who have lost their arm from the
bombings or from illnesses that led to amputation. The prosthesis materials I have been using are heavy and am applying
for this opportunity to help develop better and affordable prosthesis to people who have amputation. I have so far
fitted 8 people who are using them in Yida refugee camp where I was living. The design am working on will cater for all
types of amputations. My end goal is to be able to mass produce for both arms and limbs.

Nice idea ... What materials are used in the limb industry? Are they able to afford weights? .. What mechanism of
movement of limbs?

Thanks Omar. There is a type of plastic that is thermal formed to fit an amputee and that's expensive. The limbs
use a cable that can be operated using the other arm and there is a spring on the hook that keeps the arm locked in when
a person is using it. What did you mean by "..afford weights"..?

Thanks for the response ... I mean, can the limbs carry heavy weights?

You are welcome and yes, some of the guys I have fitted are using their prosthesis to collect firewood and even lift a
20ltr jerrycan filled with water. My design has a shoulder harness that distributes the weight evenly on the shoulder.

Nice idea, every improvement for prosthesis is good,
I think that you can merge technologies like the laser as you
said, and 3D printing.

Wow this is a great project but could you make so comfortable that it will be hard to distinguish between a person using
it and does with human hands, because alreadily we have a lot of this device but yours could make a difference.
